Francesc Balaguer

Francesc BalaguerFrancesc Balaguer, MD PhD, is the Head of the Gastroenterology Department at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona. He received his medical degree in Medicine in Barcelona in 2000 and got his PhD which focused on MUTYH-associated polyposis and Lynch syndrome in 2008. He did his postdoc at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, under the supervision of Dr Ajay Goel and Dr Richard Boland in 2008-2010. He is currently the Secretary General of the Spanish Gastroenterology Association (AEG).

He is the Director of the High-Risk Colorectal Cancer Clinic in the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona since 2006. He has a broad background in translational colorectal cancer research, as a collaborator of the EPICOLON project, a large population-based cohort of CRC patients recruited in Spain. His research is focused on the clinical characterization of high CRC risk conditions for CRC (Lynch syndrome, serrated polyposis syndrome) and the development of epigenetic biomarkers for CRC diagnosis, prognosis and prediction.
