Ian Tomlinson

Profile photo of Ian TomlinsonIan Tomlinson is incoming Director of the University of Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre.

His research encompasses genetic predisposition to cancer and cancer evolution. His focus is colorectal cancer, although he also works on several other cancer types. His work involves both primary studies of human patients and analyses in model systems. His major findings have included the identification of several high-risk cancer predisposition genes, and of multiple common polymorphisms that predispose to colorectal and other cancers.

He has also developed new models of cancer evolution, focussing on the interplay between selection and mutation, most notably represented in ‘just right’ levels of functional derangement in cancer.

He also currently leads the colorectal cancer domain of the 100,000 Genomes Project.
