Jawara Allen

Profile photo of Jawara AllenJawara Allen is a medical and graduate student at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he works with Cynthia Sears investigating the impact of the gut microbiome on colorectal cancer development.

His work focuses on the genetic and epigenetic changes that occur when colon epithelial cells are exposed to enterotoxigenic Bacteroides fragilis (ETBF) and Bacteroides fragilis toxin (BFT). The goal of his current project is to determine how ETBF-induced changes in the genome/epigenome initiate tumour formation and promote tumour growth in a mouse model of bacteria-induced colorectal cancer. In this model, tumour formation occurs rapidly after inoculation of mice with ETBF. While some of the immune mechanisms associated with tumour formation have been investigated, the changes in the epithelial cells which lead to tumor formation are still unknown.

Jawara is an HHMI Gilliam Fellow and is a member of the Edward A. Bouchet Graduate Honor Society.
